There I Stood

There I stood

Until pushed in the lake

Pulled out and given a towel

I felt half warm and better than before

The small shags of dry fabric felt like a million tiny hugs

I didn’t allow myself the comfort given by getting dry

So there I stood

Until my soggy-ness soaked through the item of my comfort

The small shags became as scratchy and sopping as the stretched clothes I had beneath

I wrapped the towel tighter

This was better than before keeping my personal warmth

closer to the room temperature water I felt still

But every few seconds a brisk breeze would cut through my momentary serenity

and send a chill through my body

I was aware that the only way to achieve full peace and comfort was to get dry

But in order to get dry I had to leave the safety of my soggy, body-heated towel

So there I stood

There I stood dripping and wriggling

Striving for the unattainable, while ignoring the solution

There I stood with decided, prideful, discomfort

There I stood with my rags of false security

There I stood
